Domain Name Hosting FAQ

General Issues

What is DNS?

DNS (Domain Name System) is the system of assigning human names to machine internet addresses (IP addresses). http://203.17.36.19/ is not particularly easy to remember, while http://www.host1.com.au/ is. To make your own domain name visible to the world (assigned with a valid IP address), it needs to be registered with a Network Information Centre (NIC) and then hosted by an internet service provider's DNS server. Host1, as an Internet Presence Provider, can offer these hosting services, and we can even register your domain with the relevant NIC for you. More information about DNS can be found at http://www.dns.net/dnsrd/

Are there any restrictions on the domain name I can choose?

The policies for each NIC vary, so check before choosing on a name. For Australian rules you can check the Enetica web site http://www.enetica.com.au.

What is a registry key/domain password?

A Registry key or Domain passowrd is the password issued to you when you created the domain, you can recover this from the registrar of record for that domain if you have lost it. You need the registry key to delegate or redelegate the domain.

What is the difference between Registration, Delegation and Redelegation of domain names?

  • Registration
Registration (reserving a domain name) involves submitting an application to a relevant NIC. This process will only reserve a domain name, it will not make it active anywhere on the internet (it will not be visible)
  • Delegation
Delegation (activating a domain name) involves getting an account with an internet presence provider (IPP) and having a previously reserved domain name assigned to a valid IP address. Registration and delegation of domain names are commonly done at the same time by the IPP when someone applies for an account with them
  • Redelegation
Redelegation (transferring a domain name) involves having the domain name transferred from one internet presence provider to another

  • Setting up a New .com.au Domain Name

Can I register a domain name myself?

Yes you can. You will need to submit a form directly to Enetica. The form to register a new .com.au domain name can be found at http://www.enetica.com.au. Note that this will only reserve a domain name - it won't become active until you have it delegated to an IPP.

I have already registered a .com.au domain name, how do I get it delegated to Host 1?

You need to register an account with us so that we can configure our DNS server for your domain name. We can also submit a delegation request on your behalf, or you can do this yourself at with the Registrar of Record for that domain.

Can you do all of this for me?

Yes! You can register online now!
